Chris Speilus: Hi, I'm Chris Speilius and the purpose of this roll identifier in the following video clips are to help you decide which roll you're actually doing and also to establish a common language between the student and the instructor to talk about the techniques.

A good kayak roll is so counterintuitive that good instruction is really essential. The intuitive path is usually the wrong path in a kayak roll. At Expediciones Chile, we believe in teaching and improving the roll that you already have. Our instructors won't change you to another roll that you don't know anything about. All of our instructors are required to know all the major Kayak rolls and to be able to teach them.

If you're a complete beginner, we'll help you decide which roll would be best for you, your body and your objectives in the sport. And at Expediciones Chile we also believe teaching in a warm pool, pleasant environment takes away the fear and helps you learn much faster. In Patagonia we actually have a hot spring pool to teach our beginners and we notice it super charges the learning process.

But first, let's define the ranges of motion available to the Kayaker and how we relate that to the boat, which is your lower body, so we can describe the movements or you can feel the movements. If we have the center point of this Kayak right down your spine, there's a center line right down the middle of the Kayak. That gives us front left quadrant, front right quadrant, back left quadrant, back right quadrant. Note, If I ask Karen to take her peck to her left knee, what quadrant she's in. She's in that left quadrant. I'm going to ask her to rub her ribs along that rim till the tippy top of her head touches the water and she's in the ninety degree position.

Now keep on rolling back to the back, to your head touches moving over to the center line of the Kayak. Roll all the way around to the other sea. Roll all the way forward, until you're kissing the deck. Sit up straight, twist back and forth, lay back on the back deck, sit up quickly if you notice a sitting up position. Those are the ranges of motions available, or combinations of those movements, and that's how we describe them to you and that's how you can look at it relative to the boat. [silence]
