Narrator: Police in Glendale, California cordon off an area surrounding an SUV rented by the man suspected of going on a murderous Christmas eve rampage. They used a remote control robot to inspect the Toyota RAV4 rented by Bruce Pardo. Police say he dressed up in a Santa suit and killed 9 people at his former inlaws' home. The electrical engineer disguised an incendiary device as a present which started the inferno that destroyed the home. 9 people died.

A rental car he had driven to the house was rigged to set off 500 rounds of ammunition and later exploded outside his brother's home. Pardo was found dead inside with a single gunshot wound to the head. With the car explosion in mind, police cleared out homes near to where they found the second vehicle.

Kurt Swainston: Well, about 10 o'clock police officers knocked on the door and asked us to evacuate. And we responded of course and so we decided we'd go catch a movie and hopefully this would clear out. They didn't give us a whole lot of details at the time but as we were driving away they indicated the bomb squad was on the way and so that encouraged us to move it along.

Narrator: Police say in this case the car was clean. The slaughter came 6 days after Pardo and his ex-wife appeared in court to finalize their divorce. Police believe the dead include Sylvia Pardo and her parents. The Pardos had been married less than 3 years. Bruce Pardo lost his job in July. Court papers indicate he was drowning in debt.

When Pardo's body was found, 17 thousand dollars was strapped to it, money he apparently planned to use to fund an escape to Canada. Matt Friedman, the Associated Press.
