Three NFL Teams Fire Head Coaches

Jack Briggs: It is black Monday for three NFL head coaches who have been fired the day after the 2008 NFL regular season came to a close. No major surprise that the Detroit Lions decided to let head coach Rob Marinelli go, the Lions completed the first 0-16 in NFL history on Sunday. Marinelli had only 10 wins in his three seasons at home in Detroit, winning only once in his last 24 games.

Long rumored to be in trouble, Cleveland Browns headcoach Romeo Crennel was shown the door on Monday. The firing comes on the heels of the weekend firing of General Manager Phil Savage. Crennel had 3 years left on a contract extension that he signed in January, after the Browns went 10-6 and just missed the playoffs in 2007. Big expectations followed but the team didn't score an offensive touchdown while losing their final 6 games of the 2008 campaign. Crennel was 24-40 in his 4 seasons in Cleveland. The most surprising of the coaching moves Monday was the decision in New York for the Jets to part ways with Eric Mangini. The Jets started the 2008 season 8-3 under new quarterback Brett Favre, but went 1-4 in their final 5 games, failing to make the playoffs despite a massive off-season spending spree. The 37 year old Mangini was 23-26 in his 3 seasons with the Jets. Jack Briggs, the Associated Press. [silence]
